Jordan’s demand for Egyptian gas rises
Thursday, January 18, 2007

In the course of his recent visit to Cairo, Jordanian Minister of Energy Dr Khalid Shraidah asked his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Fahmy to increase the supply of Egyptian natural gas by 0.8 BCM a year, to a level of 3 BCM per year, in response to economic and population growth. Both ministers discussed the second stage of the Arab Gas Pipeline, which already supplies two power plants in Jordan. They also held extensive discussions on extending the cooperation in energy and in particular the development of oil shale and tar sands, which Jordan wishes to exploit. A decision was taken to form a joint venture for that purpose.

Shraidah and Fahmy also reviewed the technical studies prepared by al-Fajr Company for Natural Gas Distribution—a joint Jordanian-Egyptian company—that plans to set up a gas distribution network in Jordan.
