4 areas earmarked for construction of high-rises
Monday, February 19, 2007

Investors wishing to construct high-rises in the capital have four districts to choose from: Abdali, Abdoun, Jubeiha and the airport, road, the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) announced on Sunday.

The locations were identified as part the first phase of GAM’s Amman Master Plan.

“Based on the findings of a detailed study, the high-rise buildings will be located in these four zones,” Amman Mayor Omar Maani told reporters during a press conference yesterday, adding that road capacity, infrastructure, preservation of heritage, maintaining green areas and creating suitable spaces for pedestrians were the major considerations behind the choice of locations, he added.

“For every dunum built over, there will be another green one,” he said, adding that no high buildings would be licensed outside these zones.

In Abdali, the high-rises will be located within the Abdali Urban Regeneration Project — a 30-hectare site in the heart of Amman that will include a modern downtown.

The project includes several high-rise buildings featuring offices, commercial centres, hotels and residences.

The second designated location begins in Wadi Abdoun and ends at the Princess Basma-Prince Ali Ben Al Hussein street intersection, while the third area is located between Queen Rania Street and Al Shaheed Ring Road near the Sports City. The area is adjacent to Al Urdun Road, which connects downtown Amman with the Kingdom’s northern cities

Meanwhile, the fourth area designated for high-rises, located south of the capital, adjacent to the eastern edge of the airport road, is bordered by Wadi Abdoun road and Jabal Arafat Street.

A new “compensation” policy for constructing and developing tower blocks will be implemented in the capital, which will detail financial commitments of project owners, according to the Amman mayor.

“These will include the cost of upgrading infrastructure and services for the projects,” Maani said, adding that GAM will use the money to develop local communities.

“This is only the first phase of the Amman Master Plan,” Maani said, adding that GAM would announce the remaining stages gradually, with the end of year as a deadline for revealing the whole plan.
